UNDERSTANDING
AUSTRALIAN STANDARDS

AS/NZS 4602.1 sets the requirements for high-visibility workwear in Australia and New Zealand, ensuring workers are visible in day, night or combined conditions (D, N or D/N). It covers garment design, approved colours and the placement of reflective tape. This standard is widely applied across construction, civil, mining and general industrial worksites where visibility is critical to safety.

RAIL VISIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Rail workwear must meet AS/NZS 4602.1 standards, with most projects requiring Class D/N high-visibility garments that include both fluorescent fabric and reflective tape for day and night use. Approved colours such as orange, along with specific reflective tape configurations like hoop patterns, are commonly required to ensure visibility from all angles. Requirements can vary by network or site, but are designed to keep workers clearly visible around moving equipment, live rail and low-light conditions.

FR / ARC FLASH REQUIREMENTS EXPLAINED

Flame-resistant (FR) or Arc Flash resistant workwear is used in high-risk environments such as mining, oil & gas and electrical industries, where exposure to heat, sparks or flames is a risk. These garments are designed to self-extinguish and reduce burn injury, helping businesses meet safety obligations and better protect workers on site.
